Our Mission
The Purpose of the Pilcrow
A pilcrow, the symbol for paragraph indents, is more aptly dubbed “the ghost of artistic potential.” In the days before the printing press, two types of scribes brought books to life: the writers (who crafted the story) and the rubrishers, who adorned those pages with elaborate borders, flourishes, and illustrations. This labor of love transformed ordinary books into works of art that deepened the reader's connection to the story. However, with the advent of the printing press, the artistry faded. The demand for quick mass production left blank spaces were the touch of creativity once flourished.
Our goal, as Pilcrow illustrators, is to be your rubrisher - to punctuate your story with beauty, filling these nests of potential. Pilcrow specializes in crafting a unique visual language for our clients' books that enhances their storytelling. Our design approach harmonizes the typography, color palette, style, and artistic layout of each page to create a cohesive and engaging reading experience. By understanding the essence of your narrative, we ensure that the visual elements resonate with the content, inviting readers to immerse themselves fully.
Let us transform your words into a beautifully designed journey.

Meet the Main Artist
Adelle Laporte - Della for short
Adelle Laporte is a budding freelance artist and digital illustrator from the lower James Bay region. At 11 years old, she discovered her talent when she first started doodling on her grandmother’s old chalkboard. Times have changed, but art remains a marvelous constant. Adelle has explored various styles and mediums, developing her skills thanks to many guiding hands (including Julia Martins, Lisa Mistiuk, Deb Hamby, and Gary Varvel). In 2022, She graduated from The Masters Guild with a certificate in entrepreneurial leadership and art, and she now works at a First Nations elementary school to finance her way through a communications degree.
Teacher by day and a student by night, Adelle takes every opportunity in between to indulge in freelance work. She has produced a vibrant, whimsical array of fine art portraits and digital storybook illustrations. As her clientele grows, Adelle hopes to use her talent and experience in team-based projects to build the beautiful worlds of today’s new storytellers.
